Mark My Words

I know that everybody has their own opinions about moving the Terrorist suspects from Guantanamo to IL, and I’m against it because I think it makes us a target. It puts us at the top of the other terrorist’s “to do” as a location, and there’s just no reason to do that. That said, the thing that really has my goat about this whole thing is the fact that we built a prison in Thompson and we’ve NEVER used it. How can that happen? We should at least be housing all of our convicted politicians in there. Maybe a mix of the terrorists, George Ryan, Stuart Levine and possibly Blogo if and when he ever gets convicted might work. That would make for a good reality show. Blogo loves being on reality shows.

That Mark Kirk guy needs to dial it back a few notches. He’s actually giving press conferences that should be called “Ideas For Terrorists”. Also, he seems ill informed. He was running the numbers on the visitors that the Gitmo prisoners would be receiving while in custody in Illinois. He said possibly up to a thousand. The only problem with that logic is that those prisoners aren’t allowed to have visitors. They’ve never had any visitors other than their legal counsel in Cuba, and there’s no indication that they will ever have any here. In the meantime, Rep. Kirk is pointing out O’Hare, a nearby nuclear reactor and The Willis Tower as possible good places to attack when the visitors are in the area. That seems like a bad idea.

I kind of like Mark Kirk and after checking out his web site I think that I would have voted for him (if I lived in his district). But I say let’s not get the terrorists any more riled up then they already are. I know you are a Veteran, Mark, so you’ve got a lot of fight in you. If you want to get mad about something, get mad about the fact that the state you represent used it’s own taxpayer’s money to build a prison that they have never used. They keep calling the prison at Thomson “underutilized”. That is a bit of an understatement since it was in fact never “utilized” at all. And Pat Quinn wants to raise my state income taxes? We’re not even getting the revenue that we should from using that facility as a haunted house during the Halloween season.

 I agree with your comments

I agree with your comments except that Kirk said if these terrorists are given constitutional rights by being transferred to the U.S., then they would be entitled to the same rights as other prisoners regarding visitors. That is the same reason there has been opposition to the trials being held in New York in a civilian court. They currently are being held in a military prison not on U.S. soil so their visitation rights can be limited.

 Steve,Don't be impressed by

 Steve,

Don't be impressed by Mark Kirk.  I live in his district and never voted for him.  He positions himself as a moderate, independent Republican but never goes against the his party.  And don't let the military background fool you, he's a typical rich boy republican from the north shore who only joined the military to to help his political resume.  His current congressional position was gift from the former representative John Porter who Kirk worked for.

Regarding the prison, it's Thomson not Thompson.

Over time you've really turned into a curmudgeon.  I've been a listener and a fan for 30 years but your last few years on the radio and a lot of your ramblings on the podcast are making you sound more and more like Rush Limbaugh and Mancow.  You're not much fun to listen to anymore.

  Huh???? Steve Dahl sounds

Huh????

Steve Dahl sounds like Rush Limburger??

Now I've heard everything.  There is so much stupid in your last paragraph it hurts my head.

If we are correcting grammer and spelling; let me point out the following in your post:

"He positions himself as a moderate, independent Republican but never goes against the his party.

"His current congressional position was A gift from the former representative John Porter who Kirk worked for.(unless you are Asian, in which case I apologize)

Spelling correction: Grammer

Spelling correction: Grammer should be "grammar"

I don't think that they are

I don't think that they are going to be getting full constitutional rights, but you might be right, other Steve. Kevin, you are right,. I'm going to pull coho1000's Coho card. SD

I have to agree with coho1000

I have to agree with coho1000 on his comments abouit Mark Kirk. I don't live in his district but I live close enough to it to where I have to hear about him enough to know he is a true Republican through and through. Don't let his moderate posings fool you...

What I don't agree with coho1000 on is his comparing Steve to Limbaugh and Mancow. Steve has never pretended to be liberal and has always shown himself to be of a moderate bend. The political comments made today aren't that different from the past. Unlike Dennis Miller, who was a raving liberal until 9/11 and then he became a raving conservative. Face it, Dennis Miller has always been raving..a raving lunatic.

That said, I don't think moving some of the Gitmo prisoners to Thomsen will raise the threat level to our state. Terrorists already live here and they are well aware of the many targets our area has to offer. What, you think they aren't aware of O'Hare and the Willis Tower? Of course they are...

OK Nardo, you got me on

OK Nardo, you got me on forgetting to include an "A" in front of gift, but that's no reason to go racial.

Regarding Steve's political leanings, he's much more conservative in his views (or at least what he conveys in broadcasts and podcasts) than he was back when he first came to town and up to about around the early '90s.  He was definitely left of center back then. Sure, he would give it to both sides when they f'd up and deserved it but his personal views seemed more liberal.  Maybe it's old age, or not being with Garry, or that he's just aggravated with his tax bracket, I don't know.  But to me over the last 10 years or so he sure seems to have taken a more conservative view than before and I find myself listening less and less.

Steve could do a whole

Steve could do a whole Dahlcast on the way our IL Pols have screwed up the prisons. Tompson was to replace Pontiac, Edgar authorized it, but George Ryan wouldn't open it, to help out his homies in Pontiac. He then authorized ANOTHER Prison, way down in southern Illinois, but Blago killed it and did such a bad job that the state had to pay out on many of the construction contracts. I remember pictures of  truckloads of building materials sitting at the site, and nobody able to do anything. This wasn't news in Chicago, but was pretty big downstate.

And we wonder why they have to raise taxes???
